We are a group of people that like to grow fruits and vegetables organically for our own use. We also grow some for a food closet that we donate food to. We help each other to enhance the growing experience for everyone.
We started the garden in 2004 with a vision from Jeannie Bruins. The garden location belongs to John Stock and the use is limited to a local organic garden for residents of the area. A group of 6 people met weekly for several months planning out the garden layout and how it would operate and how it would be funded. The plot of land had been used as a construction site dump area and needed to be leveled before it could be used. The city of Citrus Heights did the leveling and got us stared in the right direction. After that we got the fencing completed and then started the garden layout. Water lines were trenched and placed for the garden rows and water was provided for each garden plot. Each plot was to be 4 foot wide by 20 foot long.
There were 3 rows to start with 11 plots in each row.
We now have 72 plots in the garden, several fruit trees, strawberries, raspberries, apple trees and a seating area for resting and visiting.
We had a boy scout build us a tool shed as an Eagle project. Also another Eagle project was a flag pole area. We built a green house for starting plants each year and sell them to members and the general public as a fund raiser to support the garden.
We also have 2 areas set aside to grow vegetables for a local food closet. We have averaged about 1000 pounds or more of fresh produce donated to the food closet each year.
We are a members only group but we welcome anyone that wants to visit and learn about us. We have a work day on the 3rd Saturday of each month and there are people there at that time. Other times you may or may not find someone there. We are an all volunteer group
Open Dawn to Dusk every day for Members
Plants for sale. Our only fund raiser.
What a great bunch of hard workers. We really enjoyed their help.
